Movie Bitmeter: Star Trek

Star Trek

Went to see Star Trek the other day. While I don’t think it’s the best movie ever I really enjoyed it. Couldn’t step out of the cinema with the feeling the major inflated ratings it had upon release were a bit consequence of the big hype the movie had. It’s an old franchising so one can understand that are millions of fans enthusiastics about this new Star Trek Generation.

I won’t go into spoilers because I hate it myself when someone spoil it for me, but would suffice to say that this movie will surely please the old fans and the ones born after the Series or movies were starring. The authors found a clever way to bend the story enough so they can take their own path regarding characters personality and create different synergies between them. Although one might say the choice to how they did it might be the new cliché of seventh art in our century but despite that I think it was a good choice (you will surely understand what I’m saying after seeing the movie).

The cast was very well picked up. It’s strange to see Zachary Quinto the actor that plays Silar in the TV Series Heroes being Spock but to be honest worked really well. The way they introduced each character to the story was very clever, although at times might seem a bit rushed. James T. Kirk actor choice on the other hand might be more controversy because the “old” James T. Kirk was more of a gentleman, this one on his young age is a total rebel. Anyway the authors said that they didn’t intended to simply retell the story so some twists to some characters were expected and it kinda gave a new fresh air to the them.

The action is almost non-stop on this movie sometimes you don’t even have time to blink. The CGI are breathtaking, one of the best I’ve seen in recent years without a doubt. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was nominated for next years Oscars on Computer Special Effects.

In the end J.J Abrams confirms (with his partners Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman) once more that Lost success was not a coincidence.

Overall I think this movie deserves a good 7.5 / 10.

It’s true there is something in Star Trek that shows something about Lost and coincidence.

Yes it is a decent movie and Yes there are a few clever moments, but as a whole I felt it kind of ends up falling over the ledge and gripping on with the fingers of special effects. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but compared to all the previous Treks (movies and series) this one is clearly more effect heavy.

I fully agree that the current IMDB rating is way way over what the movie would merit. As for proving something, the ratings and the way it’s been recieved clearly show that the people in charge of making Star Trek (Abrams and Co.) have a very good nose when it comes to sniffing out what they should give their audience. Of course it’s pure speculation on my part if that has indeed been the leading idea. But is it coincidence that Lost happened to appear at a time when people were wanting and thus ready to recieve something else than just predictable events? And is it coincidence now that Star Trek manages to find the right tune for a lot of people to like it?

I felt the movie was a bit too fast and furious, the pace in which events evolved was very rushed. Unlike other Treks, this one could’ve used more time than it did. Oh, and adding that odd creature in the federation outpost was very un-Trek-like, for a moment I was confused which Star **** I was watching.

Also the way engineering looked like aboard the NCC-class spaceships was very out of place. Not even Enterprise, the series, that is earlier in the timeline compared to Star Trek had anything like that. Who you gonna call? The Plumbers.

It’s also good to see that the academy dress code has always been the same sexist, form fitting pyjamas =]

Thanks for the post mindseass. ;)

Yes, couldn’t agree with you more and I think I forgot to refer that, the pace of the movie, it really feels too paced. Could have been told at a slower pace, the tempo is like that I think so they could fit all the story they wanted to tell in the same movie.
