Swype a New Way to Input Text

With a market full of devices that need user input (and that get more and more complicated) solutions like simple touch and go won’t cut it. Swype is a new company that created an innovative algorithm for text input on screens. It isn’t Magic but it does looks like it.

About Swype

Swype creates text input technology for screens. The patented interface enables users to create words with one continuous finger motion across an on-screen keyboard. This approach provides a faster and easier way to write. Swype delivers single-tap, multi-tap, predictive and “swype” motions for both stylus and finger based input. In addition, the application is designed to work across a variety of devices such as phones, tablets, game consoles, kiosks, televisions, virtual screens and more. Seattle based Swype Inc. was founded by Cliff Kushler and Randy Marsden in 2003. Cliff is the co-inventor of T9, the standard predictive text-entry solution used on almost 3 billion mobile phones worldwide. Randy is the developer of the onscreen keyboard included in Windows, with an installed base of over 500 million units.

It has to be difficult to think outside the box and develop something new, such as a new form of text input. I am normally one to look at new concepts and try to adapt to new things but i honestly cant see this one catching on too well. In theory it sounds great, but it seems like the learning curve is probably pretty tough on this one. I can see where this might have practical applications but i doubt we will actually see this anywhere anytime soon if ever. Good luck to Swype, hope they can prove me wrong.

Nice commment, toxich. To be honest I totally agree with you. The learning curve seems a bit steep. Unless this really turns mainstream with … magic I’m not seeing it having much success. But well, we can be wrong. :)

Freakin amazing… the problem is that it is toooooo amazing and almost unbelievable. It has the potential to completely transform the thought to text human interface convention and may even one day completely replace the keyboard!

As cool as it is, I don’t think it will ever get up too its true potential. If this had come out as the iPhone first came out, then this might have became a very popular text input.
